Booking your own dentist for the first time
Moved out of home, or come off your parents' health fund? It's easy to let check-ups slide in your twenties, especially when you're paying for them yourself. A few things worth knowing:
- If you have extras cover, check-ups and cleans are often claimable. Check what your policy includes, then claim on the spot with HICAPS.
- No extras? Ask us what a check-up and clean will cost when you book.
- A check-up every six months or so means small problems get found while they're small — and usually cheaper to fix.
- If it's been a few years, don't worry. Tell us, and we'll start with a full check-up and go from there.
Wisdom teeth
Wisdom teeth usually come through between about 17 and 25. Some arrive without any trouble. Others get stuck under the gum, grow in at an angle, or sit so far back they're hard to clean, which can lead to pain, swelling and infection.
Worth getting checked if you notice:
- Pain or swelling at the back of your jaw
- A flap of gum over a back tooth that keeps getting sore
- A bad taste or smell from the back of your mouth
- Trouble opening your mouth wide
We'll take an X-ray to see how they're sitting and explain your options — not every wisdom tooth needs to come out. If yours would be better removed by an oral surgeon, we'll explain why and arrange the referral.
