Seabird WA 6042

Dentist near Seabird

Seabird is a life spent outdoors, on the water and in the sun. Every check-up with us includes a look at your lips, tongue and the soft tissues of your mouth. We're about 40 minutes south on Indian Ocean Drive.

More than teeth at a check-up

At every check-up we look at your lips, tongue, cheeks, the floor and roof of your mouth, and feel for lumps in your neck and jaw. It takes a minute or two, and most of what we see is nothing to worry about. If something needs a closer look, we'll tell you and arrange it.

Signs to get checked

See us or your GP if you notice any of these, and they haven't gone away within about three weeks:

  • An ulcer or sore in your mouth or on your lip that isn't healing
  • A red or white patch inside your mouth
  • A lump or thickening in your cheek, tongue, lip or neck
  • A crusty or scaly patch on your lip that keeps coming back
  • Numbness, or trouble chewing or swallowing

Smoking and drinking alcohol raise the risk of mouth cancer, and years of sun raise the risk of lip cancer. Most mouth ulcers are harmless, but it's always worth getting one checked if it hangs around.

Looking after your lips in the sun

  • Use an SPF 50+ lip balm, and reapply it after swimming and eating.
  • Wear a broad-brimmed hat when you're fishing or on the beach.
  • Your bottom lip catches the most sun, so give it extra attention.

Seabird began as rock lobster fishermen's shacks on the dunes in the 1950s and took its name from the schooner Sea Bird, wrecked nearby in 1874. From town it's Seabird Road out to Indian Ocean Drive and a straight run south to us.
