Dentist near Lancelin

Kitesurfing, windsurfing and sandboarding are part of life in Lancelin — and now and then, so is a knocked-out or broken tooth. We're about an hour south on Indian Ocean Drive. Here's what to do first.

If an adult tooth is knocked out

A knocked-out adult tooth has the best chance of being saved if it's back in its socket quickly — ideally within the first hour. We're about an hour from Lancelin, so the first steps happen before you get in the car:

  • Find the tooth and pick it up by the crown — the white part you normally see — never by the root.
  • If it's dirty, rinse it briefly in milk or saline. Don't scrub it, and don't wrap it in a tissue.
  • Push it gently back into the socket, the right way round, and bite on a clean cloth to hold it in place.
  • If it won't go back in, keep it in a small container of milk. An adult can hold it inside their cheek instead.
  • Then call us, or the nearest dentist you can get to, and come straight in.

Never put a baby tooth back in. And after a knock to the head — dizziness, vomiting, a bad headache or any loss of consciousness — go to a hospital emergency department or call 000 first.

Chipped and broken teeth

Find any broken pieces, keep them in milk and bring them with you — sometimes a piece can be bonded back on. Rinse your mouth with warm water and hold a cold pack against your face to keep swelling down.

If you can see a pink or red spot in the middle of the broken tooth, the nerve may be exposed. Call us the same day.

Making an hour's drive count

About 750 people live in Lancelin, and many more arrive in summer when the wind's up. For routine care, book the whole family back-to-back so one trip covers everyone, and ask about Saturday appointments. Ledge Point and Seabird are on the way down, and Guilderton is about 35 minutes from us.

  3. Turn right onto Breakwater Drive into Two Rocks.
  4. Turn into Constellation Entrance at the roundabout on Breakwater Drive — we're at number 6.

Questions from Lancelin

How quickly does a knocked-out tooth need to be seen?
As soon as possible. An adult tooth has the best chance if it's back in the socket within about an hour, so put it back in yourself if you can, then get to a dentist.
Should I put a knocked-out baby tooth back in?
No — putting it back can damage the adult tooth growing underneath. Call us so we can check the gum and the teeth around it.
Can a broken piece of tooth be stuck back on?
Sometimes. Keep the piece in milk and bring it with you, and we'll see whether it can be bonded back in place.
How long is the drive from Lancelin?
About an hour — 74 km south on Indian Ocean Drive, then into Two Rocks on Breakwater Drive. From Ledge Point allow about 50 minutes.
