Watching a child's bite develop

From around age 7, as the adult front teeth and first molars come through, we start looking at how the teeth and jaws are lining up. Things worth mentioning at a check-up:

• Teeth that look crowded, or adult teeth coming in behind baby teeth
• Top front teeth that stick out a long way
• Top teeth that sit behind the bottom teeth when they bite
• A thumb or finger habit that's still going once adult teeth are coming in
• Baby teeth lost much earlier or later than usual

Many of these settle on their own. If we think your child would benefit from seeing an orthodontist, we'll explain why and arrange the referral.

Straightening teeth as an adult

It's never too late to ask. Clear aligners are a series of removable plastic trays, each one moving the teeth a little. They suit some cases and not others, so we start with a check-up to make sure your teeth and gums are healthy, then talk through whether they're an option for you, how long it might take, and what it would cost.

Keeping teeth straight afterwards

Teeth can drift after braces or aligners, sometimes years later. A retainer, worn as your dentist or orthodontist advises, helps hold them in place. Bring yours to your check-ups so we can check it still fits, and tell us if it's cracked or lost.

About 760 people lived in Gabbadah at the 2021 census. Its name is a Noongar word said to mean "mouthful of water", once used for the mouth of the Moore River.

Getting here from Gabbadah

1. From Sovereign Hill or Redfield Park, head out to Indian Ocean Drive and turn south.
2. Follow Indian Ocean Drive for about 25 km, past the Guilderton turn-off and through the Wilbinga forest.
3. Turn right onto Breakwater Drive into Two Rocks.
4. Turn into Constellation Entrance at the roundabout on Breakwater Drive — we're at number 6.
