Dentist near Quinns Rocks

Waking with a sore jaw or a headache? Grinding and clenching are common, and over time they can wear and crack teeth. We're about 30 minutes up Marmion Avenue from Quinns Rocks.

Signs you might be grinding your teeth

Grinding mostly happens in your sleep, so many people don't know they do it until a partner hears it or a dentist spots the wear. Things to look out for:

  • Waking with a sore jaw, a headache at the temples, or an ache near your ears
  • Teeth that look flatter, shorter or chipped along the edges
  • Teeth that have become sensitive to cold
  • A jaw that clicks, feels tight or catches when you open wide
  • Ridges along the sides of your tongue, or bite marks inside your cheeks

Cracked teeth

A tooth that gives a sharp pain when you bite down — or when you let go — may have a crack. Grinding, large old fillings and chewing hard things like ice can all play a part.

Small cracks can often be repaired with a filling, an onlay or a crown. A crack that reaches the nerve may need root canal treatment first. Cracks can grow, so it's worth getting a suspicious tooth checked early.

What a splint does

A custom splint, or night guard, is made from a mould of your teeth and worn while you sleep. It won't stop you grinding, but it takes the wear instead of your teeth and can ease the strain on your jaw muscles.

It takes two short visits: one to take the mould, and one to fit the splint and check your bite. Bring it to your check-ups so we can make sure it's still fitting well.

Questions from Quinns Rocks

Can a dentist tell if I grind my teeth?
Usually, yes. Grinding leaves wear patterns on the teeth, and we'll ask about jaw pain, headaches and how you sleep.
Is a pharmacy mouthguard the same as a custom splint?
No. Boil-and-bite guards are made to a general shape. A custom splint is made from a mould of your teeth and adjusted to your bite, so it's thinner and fits more closely.
How many visits does a splint take?
Two short visits: one to take the mould and one to fit the splint and check your bite.
How long is the drive from Quinns Rocks?
About 27 km, or around 30 minutes north along Marmion Avenue and then Two Rocks Road.
