Dentist near Mindarie
Almost a third of Mindarie's residents were born in the UK. If you're one of them, dental care here works a little differently from home. Here's what to expect, from a family-run practice about 30 minutes north.
How dental care works in Australia
Medicare covers GP visits, but it doesn't cover most dental care for adults. Most dentists here are private, and there are no NHS-style charge bands: each part of your treatment has its own item number and fee.
- Private health insurance with extras cover (sometimes called general treatment) helps pay for dental care. New policies often have waiting periods before you can claim, so check yours.
- Children may be eligible for Medicare's Child Dental Benefits Schedule, which we bulk-bill.
- Before any bigger treatment, you'll get a written estimate with item numbers, so you can check what your fund will pay.
- We use HICAPS, so your fund's rebate comes off at the desk and you just pay the gap.
Bringing your dental history
If you've had crowns, implants, root canal treatment or orthodontics back home, it helps us to know. Ask your old practice for copies of your recent X-rays and notes — many will email them — and bring what you have to your first visit.
No records? That's fine. We'll start with a full check-up and take the X-rays we need.
A few words that are different here
- Check-up and clean — what you might know as a check-up and scale and polish.
- Extras cover — the part of your private health insurance that pays towards dental.
- The gap — what's left to pay after your health fund's rebate.
- Preferred provider — a practice with an agreement with a fund, which can mean a smaller gap. We're a preferred provider for HBF, HCF, HIF, nib and CBHS.
